Senior's Help & Awareness Council (S.H.A.C.)
The Senior's Help & Awareness Council (S.H.A.C.) was formed in 1993 by a group of interested senior community volunteers ready to assist the Abbotsford Police Department in identifying criminal victimization of seniors, and to provide an enhanced crime prevention service.
S.H.A.C. is primarily concerned with crime prevention and making Abbotsford a safer community for seniors under the umbrella of Abbotsford Police Department Community Policing initiatives.
The Senior's Help & Awareness Council can provide a speaker to speak to groups, and has communicated their many services through brochures, pamphlets, magnetic refrigerator cards, and health cards. They have also provided Home Security Checklists including:
- Are all exterior doors secured with a dead bolt?
- Does the main entrance door have a wide-angle viewer?
- Are sliding doors and windows secure against being forced, or from being lifted out of the frame?
- Do all windows that open have adequate locking devices?
- Have you installed timers (both interior and exterior) to activate lights in your absence?
- Is the address posted on your house and clearly visible from the street both night and day?
- Are trees and shrubs trimmed to allow for visibility along the perimeter (particularly entries) of the house?
