Applicant Requirements

It is the policy of the Abbotsford Police Department to select the best, most competitive applicants.  Standards on selection, recruitment, and training comply with both the spirit and intent of current human rights legislation.

To become a police officer the following criteria must be met:

Character

  • Possess exemplary moral and ethical character
  • Possess a high degree of personal integrity and maturity
  • Possess the ability to learn
  • Possess the ability to use sound judgment and common sense
  • Be able to function well in a team environment
Attributes

  • Minimum of 19 years of age
  • Grade 12 diploma, or equivalent
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident 
  • Be physically fit - physical fitness should be a part of your lifestyle.
  • A valid Standard First Aid Certificate with a CPR endorsement
  • A valid driver's licence and a good driving record.  Learner and Novice restrictions (Class 7 in BC) are not permitted.
  • Excellent physical condition is required. 
  • Binocular vision with uncorrected visual acuity of not less than 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye with a corrected visual acuity no less than 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other eye. Good colour vision and visual fields according to visual standards as recommended by the Canadian Ophthalmological Society for police officers is also required. **
  • Post Secondary Education is preferred but not required. 

** NOTE: These standards apply to those applicants who have had laser eye surgery. Prior to being hired, applicants must wait a minimum of 3 months from the date of surgery and have their vision re-evaluated

  • Other significant accomplishments
  • Applied knowledge of computers and basic keyboard skills
