What is an APD Reserve Constable?
- A sworn, trained volunteer with “limited Peace Officer status”
- Serves the community through a variety of duties
- Works under direct or general supervision of a police officer
What is the Purpose of the Reserve Program?
- Strengthen relationship between police and community through educational training, community interaction and crime prevention
- Allows opportunity for citizens and students to work within the police department
- Assistance to the police department in various scenarios that may arise (e.g. natural disasters)
- Educating the public in matters relating to crime prevention
Applicant Requirements Include:
- AGE – Applicants must be a minimum age of 19 years upon commencement of training.
- CITIZENSHIP – Must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident.
- HEALTH and FITNESS – Must be physically fit to perform Reserve duties and demonstrate a fit and healthy lifestyle.
- EDUCATION – Minimum Grade 12 graduation by B.C. standards or equivalent. Post secondary education is recommended.
- FIRST AID – Must possess and maintain a current B.C. first aid certificate with CPR.
- DRIVERS LICENCE/RECORD – Applicants must possess the minimum of a valid Class 5 B.C. driver’s license with a driving record indicative of responsible driving habits. (A Class 7 “N” Novice license may be considered in exceptional circumstances).
- PERSONAL CHARACTER – Must be of mature, responsible and good character, and have no criminal record. Must pass background checks that assess integrity and personal suitability to the same standard as police officers.
- DIVERSITY – The Abbotsford Police Department actively seeks to represent the gender and ethnic diversity of the city.
What Duties Do Reserves Perform?
The primary focus of Abbotsford Police Reserve Constables is performing community policing and crime prevention duties. Reserves also perform Traffic duties, assist at special events, aid police officers in a variety of training capacities, partake in ride-alongs, and assist in other duties as required.

In order to apply, you must complete the Abbotsford Police Department’s Reserve Application package. Please visit the Abbotsford Community Police Office to pick up an application package from Cst Patterson at the Abbotsford Community Police Office

Complete instructions accompany the form, so be sure to read them carefully. Once completed, the package must be delivered in person.
Reserve Training
Successful candidates will be sworn in as Reserve Constables and will be required to complete the training outlined below. While completing the training, Reserves have the option of receiving University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) practicum credit in select programs.
- 100 hours of classroom studies including a midterm exam, final exam, and effective presentation
- Classroom topics include: criminal law, provincial statutes, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, police responsibilities, ethics and code of conduct
- Traffic control training
- Drill, dress and deportment
