Professional Standards Section

The members of the Professional Standards Section report directly to the Chief Constable of the Abbotsford Police Department.  The Professional Standards Section is currently staffed by one Sergeant and one Staff Sergeant.

The conduct of municipal police officers in British Columbia is regulated by the British Columbia Police Act.  The Professional Standards Section is responsible for carrying out thorough and comprehensive investigations of police officers involved in alleged criminal wrongdoing and defaults under the B.C. Police Act or infractions of other statutes.  

In British Columbia, The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) was created to provide independent civilian oversight of all aspects of investigations into complaints made against municipal police officers and departments.  The Police Complaint Commissioner has the authority to order an additional investigation or a new investigation if he is not satisfied.   He may also order an outside municipal agency or the RCMP to conduct an external investigation, or he may order a public hearing.  The Professional Standards Section cooperates fully with the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner to ensure the highest quality of investigation and to maintain the public trust.  

Complaints may be made orally or in writing and complainants have a choice of making "Registered" or "Non-Registered" complaints. "Registered" complaints provide complainants with rights under the Police Act pertaining to investigational progress reports, disclosure of a Final Investigation Report (subject to Freedom of Information limitations), and some rights to appeal. The Complaint Form can be submitted by mail, fax, or delivered in person to the police department involved or to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner. The Complaint Form can also be completed and submitted conveniently on-line via the OPCC website located at www.opcc.bc.ca.

Complaints against members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are handled by the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP, a separate oversight body.
