AbbyPD gives dating advice
Meeting someone online has become one of the most common forms of dating these days. For the most part, online dating is safe and provides a way to connect with new people. However, it can come with some risk – including unknowingly connecting with fraudsters who capitalize on others’ hopes for romance and relationships.
Unfortunately, some scammers move past online frauds and try to connect in person. A simple Internet search for “online dating safety tips” will provide users with some valuable safety related information. Many of these internet sites offer tips to help keep users of online dating services safe. The AbbyPD offers the following tips as advice for users of Internet based dating or meeting sites to help keep you safe and protect you from thieves.
Setting up your profile:
- Pay attention to the geography setting in your dating app - strangers should not have access to your exact location or neighbourhood.
- Avoid putting a lot of personal information on your profile - don’t include your last name, links to your social media accounts or contact information. The more information you provide, the easier it is for strangers to steal your identity or track you down in person.
Interacting online:
- Use the dating app messaging system - it may be less convenient than texting, but it’s safer than giving a stranger access to your phone number.
- Ask a friend for advice - if you are interested in someone, get a friend to check the profile and offer honest feedback. If you have mutual friends, ask questions and try to find out what the person is like.
Meeting in person:
- Arrange for your own transportation - avoid letting someone know where you live.
- Meet in a public places as you are getting to know your new companion.
- Stay aware and stay alert - you are with a stranger. Don’t leave your valuables unattended. Drink less than you would with friends and avoid being out until you are tired.
The AbbyPD wants you to be safe while dating online. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, you have every right to leave the situation, location or conversation. Contact the police if you feel your safety is at risk.
