The Abbotsford Police Department’s (APD’s) Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) is a focused and sustainable intelligence-led unit that utilizes innovative enforcement techniques to primarily target priority property-related criminals, property crimes related to public safety and specific crime areas. CRU provides support to other APD units as required.
Operational Priorities:
- Identify, investigate and target priority and prolific property offenders
- Investigate property related crimes where there is an immediate risk to public safety (e.g. cat burglary)

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) is a covert unit providing targeted drug enforcement of CDSA violations within or impacting the City of Abbotsford.
Duties:
- Identify and target individuals or groups involved in the illicit drug trade, and who live or operate their criminal enterprise within the City of Abbotsford
- Develop and maintain human source assets in order to gather intelligence and information regarding the illicit drug trade
- Maintain and provide subject matter expertise and provide timely intelligence support Operational Units and Management regarding all matters relating to CDSA offences
The Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit mandate is to reduce Internet-facilitated child sexual exploitation by investigating and assisting in the prosecution of sexual offenders as well as identifying victimized children.
Duties:
- Ensure the safety of the citizens of Abbotsford through the investigation and apprehension of offenders involved in Internet-facilitated child sexual exploitation offences
- Identify and support victims of child sexual exploitation and abuse
- Provide education and prevention strategies related to internet child exploitation
The Major Crime Unit (MCU) mandate is the investigation of complex criminal offences.
Duties:
- Ensure the safety of the citizens of Abbotsford through the investigation and apprehension of offenders involved in major criminal offences
- Identify and support victims of crime
- Collaborate with community groups, other law enforcement agencies and justice system partners to coordinate responses to major crime incidents
The mandate of the Digital Forensic Lab (DFL) is to locate, analyze and interpret digital evidence.
Duties:
- Assist members with acquiring, analyzing and interpreting digital evidence, and providing related opinion evidence
- Provide training and best practices for investigators seizing and handling devices that contain digital evidence
- Provide expert evidence in court related to the analysis and interpretation of the digital data
The Abbotsford Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) conducts follow-up, and in some cases primary, investigation of the most serious intimate partner violence cases in Abbotsford.
OPERATIONAL PRIORITIES
- Provide follow-up investigation and witness management of intimate partner violence files that have been assessed as the “highest risk”.
- Develop, coordinate and implement strategies throughout the APD to increase attention, efficiencies and resources to all intimate partner violence cases.
- Engage the community with both reactive and proactive strategic initiatives.
- Partner with available social, justice system, and civilian resources to coordinate efforts to reduce and eliminate intimate partner violence.
