Police Information Check

(Criminal Record Check)

The Abbotsford Police offers two types of Police Information Checks 

1. Police Information Check - Vulnerable Sector
2. Police Information Check - non-Vulnerable Sector

Police Information Check – Vulnerable Sector

Applicants who work with the vulnerable sector will receive a check that:

• Includes a search of, at a minimum, CPIC, PIP, JUSTIN and PRIME records.
• Discloses to the applicant all warrants, outstanding charges, convictions and adverse contact.
• Does not include the disclosure of apprehensions under s. 28 of the Mental Health Act.
• Does include adverse contact involving the threat or actual use of violence directed at other individuals (regardless of, but without disclosing, mental health status).
• Does not include youth offences unless provided for under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
• Does include information on a sexual offence conviction where a pardon or record suspension has been granted.

Police Information Check - non-Vulnerable Sector

Applicants who are not working with the vulnerable sector will receive a check that:

• Includes a search of, at a minimum, CPIC, PIP, JUSTIN and PRIME
• Discloses to the applicant all warrants, outstanding charges and convictions.
• Does not disclose adverse contact.
• Does not include the disclosure of apprehensions under s. 28 of the Mental Health Act.
• Does not include youth offences unless provided for under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

**In cases where non-disclosable information indicates a significant threat to public safety, police agencies may either refuse to complete the check or take action under their duty to warn responsibilities.**

Important Information to Note

• The Abbotsford Police Department plays a neutral role in determining suitability regarding employment and/or volunteer risk assessment.
• The Abbotsford Police Department is in no way making a recommendation as to the suitability of the applicant for the position, nor should the agency consider the existence of police information to mean a compulsory disqualification of the individual.
• Information contained within a Police Information Check is based in part upon information provided by the applicant and a police agency cannot guarantee it will identify all information pertaining to the individual.
• A Police Information Check discloses more than just a record of convictions.
  • Police incidences of an accusatory nature where an applicant was considered a suspect or where charges were recommended may also be disclosed dependent on provincial and federal retention periods.
