Patrol Section

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Patrol Branch is primarily a uniformed section with plain-clothes abilities providing initial first response to routine and emergency calls for service. The Operational Priorities of Patrol Division are:

  • Respond in a timely and effective manner to calls for service from the citizens of Abbotsford
  • Promote public safety by engaging in intelligence-led proactive enforcement to increase police visibility, reduce crime, and enforce of traffic laws
  • Provide support to other sections as required (e.g. scene security, transports and investigative follow-up)
Victim Services

The purpose of Victim Services is to lessen the trauma associated with being the victim of crime or trauma, and to try to prevent re-victimization. Empowerment of the individual through emotional support, information, practical assistance and appropriate referrals is the cornerstone of the program's effectiveness. As much as possible clients are encouraged to exercise choice as they proceed through the Criminal Justice System and to determine the source and degree of assistance they wish to receive.

Hours of Operation:
Abbotsford Police Victim Services provides:

  • Regular office hours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday (except statutory holidays)
  • 24 hours, 7 days a week crisis response at the request of the Police
  • 24 hours, 7 days a week answering machine

Forensic Identification Section

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Forensic Identification Section (FIS) is a uniformed section providing support to other APD sections. FIS attends and processes crime scenes, vehicles, and exhibits for the purposes of identifying criminals and supporting charges. The section documents crime scenes and develops and collects real and trace evidence, including but not limited to, fingerprints, DNA, footwear and tire impressions.

Patrol Based Emergency Response Team
  • Provide specialized tactics and equipment to deal with critical incidents in a safe and professional manner
  • Act as a patrol based unit that provides response to calls for service and related investigations
  • Maintain operational readiness through current training practices and the maintenance of tactical equipment
  • Provide training and support resources to all units within the Abbotsford Police Department
Gang Crime Unit

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Gang Crime Unit is an operational investigative unit whose primary function is to suppress gang and associated organized crime in the community.
The Gang Crime Unit utilizes covert methods in addition to overt uniformed presence to proactively target and disrupt gang and organized crime associates and their activities.
Being intelligence-led, the Gang Crime Unit coordinates its operations and liaises with a number of internal policing sections and outside law enforcement agencies to accomplish its mission. The Gang Crime Unit partners with community organizations and families of at risk youth and gang associates where appropriate to employ intervention strategies.

OPERATIONAL PRIORITIES

  • Disrupt gang and organized crime activity through targeted, intelligence led enforcement.
  • Handling and development of Confidential Informants.
  • Intervention through community engagement to deter gang recruitment.
  • Assist and support families and at risk youth and those already involved in gang activity seeking to make positive life choices and reject a criminal lifestyle.
  • Coordination of, and recruitment for, the Bar Watch Program.
General Investigation Section

The Abbotsford Police Department’s General Investigation Section (GIS) is a uniformed section tasked with assuming Criminal Code investigations from Patrol which require significant secondary investigation in relation to calls for service.

What we do:

  • Investigate files as per the AbbyPD Crime Allocation Definitions. Current file examples include historical sexual assaults, fatal motor vehicle incidents and frauds over $1500.
  • Develop members’ investigative skills for positions within the Criminal Investigation Branch.
  • Mentor Patrol members with larger investigations.
Intelligence Hub

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Intelligence Hub includes the management and oversight of two significant police functions: Human Source Unit and Crime Analysis.

By collecting information from sources, computer databases and partner agencies, the Intelligence Hub gathers and analyzes intelligenc, which provides support and assistance to all sections within the Abbotsford Police Department and to other law enforcement agencies.

Emergency Response Team

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) is a specialized unit of carefully selected, trained and equipped members which uses advanced tactics and equipment to resolve incidents involving a threat to public safety which would otherwise exceed the capabilities of traditional law enforcement first responders and/or investigative units, in a safe and professional manner.

Duties

  • Provide specialized tactics and equipment to resolve incidents involving a threat to public safety, which would otherwise exceed the capabilities of traditional law enforcement first responders and/or investigative units, in a safe and professional manner.
  • Provide support for patrol-based units in response to calls for service and related investigations.
  • Provide training and direction to APD members in matters related to critical incidents and officer safety
  • Be available as a resource to all units within the Abbotsford Police Department.
Ceremonial Unit

The Abbotsford Police Department Ceremonial Unit represents the Abbotsford Police Department and the City of Abbotsford in various law enforcement and community-related events.

OPERATIONAL PRIORITIES

  • The planning and execution of Police funerals for active Abbotsford Police Department members;
  • Assisting with the planning and execution of the BC Law Enforcement Memorial;
  • Representing the Abbotsford Police Department at the National Police and Peace Officers Memorial and at other memorials & funeral services as required;
  • Representing the Abbotsford Police Department at civic events including but not limited to Remembrance Day, Vimy Ridge Memorial, Canada Day Parade, International Airshow and citizenship ceremonies
  • Providing a ceremonial presence for Department events including but not limited to the Constabulary Dinner, Final Inspections and Change of Command ceremonies.
