What is an AbbyPD Reserve Constable?

• A sworn, trained volunteer with "limited Peace Officer" status.
• Serves the community through a variety of duties.
• Depending on the task, works under direct supervision of a police officer or the general supervision of the police department.

What is the Purpose of the Reserve Program?

• To strengthen the relationship between the police and community through educational training, community interaction and crime prevention.
• Allows opportunity for citizens to volunteer within the police department.
• To provide assistance to the police department in various community events.
• Educating the public in programs relating to crime prevention.

What Duties do Reserves Perform?

• The primary focus of the Abbotsford Police Reserve Constables is performing community policing and crime prevention duties.
• Reserves also perform Traffic duties, assist at special events, aid police officers in a variety of training capacities, participate in ride-a-longs, and assist in other duties as required.

Reserve Training

Successful candidates must complete the Reserve Constable Training Program mandated by the Ministry of the Solicitor General's office for British Columbia. Training takes about 4 months with classes held 1-2 evenings a week and 1 weekend day. Candidates study legal issues, crime prevention, traffic, professionalism and ethics, communication tactics and self-defense training. Practical and written exams are held for self-defense and communications. The two Provincial written exams are administered on classroom studies. The Provincial written exams are conducted by the Justice Institute of BC. The passing score for these examinations is a minimum of 70%.Training also has a strong physical/team building component.
